Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead Game Studios’ creative director, recently revealed that the developers behind the Helldivers game aren’t going to have a major role in the forthcoming movie adaptation.
When he was asked about the studio’s involvement in the film’s creation on X, Pilestedt responded, “The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we’ll see.” He explained, “We’re not Hollywood folks, and we’re not familiar with the intricacies of filmmaking. So, naturally, we don’t, and arguably shouldn’t, hold the final say.”
Sony dropped some news last week at CES, stating that the film is still in its early stages. However, it doesn’t look like anyone from Arrowhead is steering this project. While there’s always a chance things could shift, it doesn’t appear we’ll see a collaborative effort akin to what happened with The Last of Us TV series.
With no major figures linked to the movie yet, it’s anyone’s guess how it’ll capture the game’s thrilling essence. Fans of Helldivers know the excitement of taking on space bugs and robots as part of a satirical empire’s space marines. Given its inspiration from the 1997 hit, Starship Troopers—a classic film owned by Sony that still resonates today—it’ll be interesting to see how closely the movie adaptation will echo its source material.
The production is in the hands of PlayStation Productions, working alongside Sony Pictures. Ever since its inception in 2019, PlayStation Productions has been dedicated to adapting Sony’s top video game franchises into films and TV shows. Their lineup includes titles like Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, and The Last of Us. The Helldivers film is one of seven projects currently underway, most of which are still waiting for release dates. Among other anticipated films in the pipeline are adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and Gravity Rush.
