The voice actors involved in the French version of Apex Legends have reportedly taken a stand against a proposal that involved using their voices for AI training purposes.
Pascale Chemin, known for bringing the character Wraith to life in the French adaptation of this popular battle royale game, recently expressed concerns on Twitter. She highlighted that a contract clause, presumably from Electronic Arts, suggested their vocal performances could be utilized to train AI models. Although she didn’t directly name the game and publisher, the details strongly point toward Apex Legends and EA being the entities involved.
In solidarity with Chemin, 31 other voice actors associated with the project have reportedly rejected the agreement. They collectively expressed their opposition through a formal letter sent to the publisher.
Chemin emphasized the urgency of their stance, as translated by ResetEra, sharing, “We need to stand united now to ensure a protective clause for our voices is officially included in our contracts—not just for us, but across all video game dubbing studios. Without this, securing such protection might never happen, leading us to eventual turmoil.”
She acknowledged the current scarcity of work, saying, “Refusing work in today’s climate may seem irrational. Many of us are facing financial difficulties with limited job opportunities. Of course, a paycheck is appealing. But what’s being asked isn’t just work—it’s a demand to surrender our craft to train AI systems that could replace us tomorrow. We’re being pressured to support the very technology that undermines our profession. It feels like shooting ourselves in the foot.”
