ILM and Lucasfilm have recently unveiled their plans for an exciting new addition to the Star Wars gaming universe: an immersive experience named Star Wars: Beyond Victory – A Mixed Reality Playset.
Exclusively designed for Meta Quest 3 and 3S, this adventure invites players to dive into a world set during the era of the Han Solo prequel, Solo: A Star Wars Story, from 2018. Although details are gradually being revealed, early buzz suggests that podracing will feature prominently. According to ILM, players will encounter Volo Bolus as they team up with none other than the legendary podracer pilot Sebulba. This collaboration promises a thrilling mixed reality experience packed with action and excitement.
The term ‘Playset’ hints at the potential inclusion of various mixed reality mini-games, though ILM has yet to confirm specifics beyond the tantalizing tidbits already shared. True to their usual approach, ILM is unveiling details at a deliberate pace, gradually introducing characters and elements to build anticipation for the game. As of now, a firm release date or trailer hasn’t been announced.
Excitement is bound to build, especially with the promise of new insights at the upcoming ‘Star Wars Celebration 2025’ in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled for April 18-20. There, attendees will have the chance to experience the game firsthand. Meta plans on setting up over a dozen demo stations and will also showcase versions of their previous VR hits, including Vader Immortal and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.
So, why choose mixed reality for this new venture? According to Jose Perez III, the director of Star Wars: Beyond Victory, the medium provides a unique fusion of immersion and interactivity, delivering the Star Wars universe directly to players’ living rooms like never before.
It’s worth noting that Meta’s support of mixed reality, reminiscent of their past backing of ILM’s Star Wars VR projects, is likely playing a significant role in the game’s development and potential success.
