Soul Paint offers a unique VR experience, blending 3D drawing with self-reflection.
Unveiled at SXSW 2024, this project is the brainchild of Sarah Ticho & Niki Smit, with narration by Rosario Dawson. Through cutting-edge technology, participants engage in a journey to explore and choreograph their emotions. As you navigate this ethereal space, Soul Paint enables you to draw in 3D, interacting with your virtual form.
By integrating body-mapping techniques and VR, the creators aim to deepen our understanding of emotions. Their goal is to enhance empathy and social connection by sharing these experiences with others when you’re ready.
At the NewImages Festival 2025, I had the chance to try this firsthand at the XR Market. The session kicks off with a powerful query: “Where are you feeling?” Initially, I wasn’t sure, but soon, Soul Paint evolved into a spiritual journey. This celestial landscape invites you to express yourself in a physical and emotional way.
The ensuing experience is soothing and introspective. Although my artistic skills are lacking, that didn’t matter. The act of drawing on my virtual body and recording a voice note to share felt meaningful. It’s an innovative way to communicate feelings when words fall short.
Soul Paint serves as a mirror in VR, fostering presence and player autonomy. While it’s a linear experience with limited actions, the thoughtful, meditative aspects are compelling. I find myself hoping for more experiences like this in the future.
As of now, a home release for Soul Paint hasn’t been announced. Stay tuned for updates if we hear more news.
