There’s been a lot of chatter recently about the possibility of an Xbox handheld device, and Asus has just added fuel to the fire. They released a teaser video on their X account, formerly known as Twitter, that has everyone talking.
The teaser features a quirky animated robot that’s busy programming some upgrades for itself on a terminal. Right when it’s about to implement these improvements, two devices drop into its world: a gadget resembling the ROG Ally X gaming console and a controller akin to the ROG Raikiri Pro. Once the dust settles, the robot transforms into what looks suspiciously like the company’s latest high-end handheld console.
Adding to the intrigue, the official Xbox account jumped into the conversation, replying with the infamous side-eye meme. Although there haven’t been any concrete announcements, Microsoft’s playful response seems to hint at Project Kennan. This project involves developing a gaming handheld with Asus, aimed at merging the Xbox and Windows platforms into a seamless experience.
While specifics are still under wraps, the teaser hints at some exciting features for the upcoming Xbox handheld, including an extended battery life, enhanced performance, more storage space, and a fresh design.
Asus shared this eye-catching video on March 31, 2025, at precisely 2 pm EST, seemingly to avoid any confusion with April Fool’s day antics, a time when tech companies are known for their playful pranks. However, much like their ROG Ally reveal from a couple of years back, this latest Xbox console tease appears to be genuine.
An important context to consider is the expected reveal of the eagerly awaited Switch 2 at Nintendo Direct on April 2. Asus might be trying to capture some of the spotlight with their announcement, stirring excitement among PC and handheld gaming fans. That said, convincing die-hard Nintendo fans might be a tougher task.
While we’re not holding our breath for a new Xbox console until 2027, a handheld Xbox device would definitely be a game-changer. Fingers crossed it will run Xbox games right from the start, rather than being just another Windows 11 device dressed up in Xbox styling.
