Bungie has just lifted the veil off its forthcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, granting us our inaugural peek at the gameplay. Mark your calendars because Marathon is set to launch on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on September 23rd, 2025.
In this game, you’ll don the role of a Runner—essentially cybernetic mercenaries decked out with unique abilities. You can team up with up to two other players, and together, you’ll square off against hostile AI security forces and rival Runner teams. Your mission is to gather weapons, implants, and various gear along the way. The catch? You need to survive to keep your loot for future games.
If you prefer to go it alone, there’s a solo mode that allows you to dive into matches without any teammates. Your goals remain the same: defeat opposing forces and extract with as much treasure as possible, all by yourself.

Although the official release is still a ways off, you can still get a taste of the action with a Closed Alpha starting on April 23rd. Interested players will need to swing by the official Marathon Discord server to sign up.
