Hey everyone! Nobuo Uematsu here, the composer for Fantasian Neo Dimension.
When I first got the call from Producer Hironobu Sakaguchi about working on Fantasian, I made the decision that this would be the last video game soundtrack I’d create entirely by myself. With that in mind, I was determined to pour every ounce of creativity into it. My office, which was previously filled with bits and pieces reflecting my personal hobbies, was transformed into what I dubbed “Fantasian mode.” This was to push myself into a creative corner and focus entirely on the task at hand. I devoted several months to composing and I can confidently say I have no regrets. I hope you enjoy Fantasian Neo Dimension as much as I enjoyed creating the soundtrack. This piece stands as the crowning jewel in my over 30-year career of composing soundtracks for video games.
Today, I’m excited to share with you five of my favorite tracks from the Fantasian Neo Dimension soundtrack.
### 1. Main Theme of Fantasian
Creating the main theme for a game always comes with its challenges. I often approach it with an ambition to surpass anything I’ve done before, but that pressure can sometimes slow me down. The key moment comes when I remind myself, “This is what I’m good at.” It’s this mindset that eventually helped me create the Main Theme of Fantasian.
### 2. Prickle and Clicker’s Theme
Think of a clunky, outdated robot—not the kind you’d find fresh off the production line. It’s imperfect, with odd speech patterns, but there’s a charm in its clumsiness. These are the thoughts I had in mind while composing this quirky, upbeat tune.
### 3. Shangri-La
This track holds a special place in my heart. Its scat vocalization, reminiscent of a “lan lan~♪” melody, captured my imagination. I can imagine doing a live performance someday with full lyrics, which would be an exciting challenge.
### 4. God Realm
I often find myself pondering what defines “proper” music. Should it always have a graceful melody with harmonious chords? Or can it be something unconventional and eerie? During my years in this field, such questions have intrigued me, making me wonder about the true essence of music.
### 5. Kina (Destiny) [featuring Yuria Miyazono]
Sakaguchi’s speed in writing song lyrics is impressive. In the past, he’d have a first draft ready usually by the next day after receiving a melody from me. However, in this case, his lyrics were penned first, and I came up with a melody to match. The process went smoothly for this track. And truth be told, Yuria Miyazono’s vocals elevate it to another level altogether.
Be sure to experience these pieces in-game when Fantasian Neo Dimension hits the PlayStation Store on December 5, 2024.
