I’m well aware that wading into the world of David Cage’s games can be as awkward for you as it is for me, but here we go again with something intriguing. Elliot Page, who played a major role in the original game, is gearing up to bring Beyond: Two Souls (released in 2013) to television.
Remember that quirky, somewhat jumbled game about Jodie Holmes, a young woman with a supernatural connection to a spirit named Aiden? The game followed their tumultuous journey as they tried to dodge those who wanted to exploit their unique abilities. Even with standout performances from Elliot Page and Willem Dafoe, the game’s narrative often felt scattered and disjointed, though it did boast some stunning visuals alongside a few memorable moments.
According to Deadline, Page’s company, Pageboy Productions, has secured the rights from Quantic Dream, the game’s original developer, to adapt this narrative into a TV series. The game itself was a blend of interactive storytelling and action gameplay, essentially operating like a complex TV show already. So, unless they’re planning some significant rewrites, it’s hard to say exactly what new direction they might take. There’s hope they can transform it into something that steers clear of any past narrative missteps!
For those who’ve followed the gaming industry for a while, you might recall the rocky times Page faced during and after the production of Beyond, as well as the not-so-great reputation David Cage had at Quantic Dream. Yet, Page mentioned that despite the hurdles, the overall experience was rewarding enough to warrant revisiting the story. Page described the project by saying, “Working on the game was one of the most demanding and satisfying acting projects I’ve ever taken on… The narrative depth and emotional richness of the story provide a solid foundation for us. We’re excited to bring a fresh perspective to the characters and their stories that will connect with both long-time fans and new audiences.” It seems like they’re viewing this as an opportunity to correct some past errors, but how that plays out remains to be seen.
As for Quantic Dream and David Cage’s role in this adaptation, it looks like they will still be offering some guidance. Cage himself expressed enthusiasm, saying, “I was in awe of Elliot Page’s performance in the game, and I can’t imagine anyone else bringing the same passion to this story on another platform.” It’s clear they’re looking forward to what’s to come and keen to see this new iteration succeed.
