Be advised: this article contains major story spoilers for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The Assassin’s Creed series has long been known for weaving historical figures into its rich tapestry, whether it’s geniuses like Leonardo da Vinci or rulers like Cleopatra. Even as the series has evolved, this signature element remains steady, and the latest installment, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, embraces it fully.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows isn’t just remarkable for its sprawling map. Its narrative and character dynamics are deeply entwined with real-world history and personalities. A key figure is Momochi Sandayu, who plays a critical role in shaping Naoe’s past.
The Real-World History of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Momochi Sandayu
Momochi Sandayu, known as the Defender of Iga, is a mesmerizing historical character despite the scarcity and contradictions in records about his life. Momochi’s birth year is debated, usually thought to be either 1512 or as late as 1525. Regardless, historians agree on his crucial influence during pivotal moments in Iga. In 1579, Oda Nobunaga attempted to bring Iga under his dominion by dispatching his son with a large army. However, Momochi Sandayu is reputed to have led a fierce resistance against this invasion using guerrilla warfare—techniques that would later be known as Ninjutsu. This strategic prowess made a mark, though it’s believed Momochi perished in 1581 when Nobunaga’s forces launched another, more successful attack on Iga. Some stories, however, suggest he survived and lived incognito as a farmer.
Folklore adds more intrigue, suggesting Momochi trained legendary figures like Hattori Hanzo and the outlaw Ishikawa Goemon, who famously robbed the wealthy to aid the poor.
Momochi Sandayu’s Influence on Naoe
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Momochi Sandayu, while not constantly present in the game, significantly impacts the story, particularly concerning Naoe’s life journey. Before the events of the game, Momochi became part of Japan’s Brotherhood of Assassins, the Kakushiba ikki. Working alongside Naoe’s parents and fellow ninja Hattori Hanzo, Momochi’s first encounter with Naoe happens as she’s defending her village in Iga. Her impressive skills, demonstrated in battle, earn her his mentorship. Under Momochi’s guidance, Naoe hones her ninja skills, mastering stealth, subterfuge, and receiving a crucial gift—a grappling hook—from him. Although faithful to history, the game depicts Momochi’s demise during the second invasion, this time meeting his end at the hands of Yasuke.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows releases on March 20, 2025, and promises a mature audience a gripping and historically layered experience.
