Sony has taken a bold step by setting a firm release date for a major game in the fall of 2025, unaffected by the looming shadow of Grand Theft Auto 6. Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei, the much-anticipated sequel to 2020’s acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, is set to launch on the PlayStation 5 on October 2.
This marks the first significant entry into the fall release schedule from a gaming industry typically wary of competing against Rockstar’s massive franchise. With GTA 6’s fall release confirmed by Take-Two Interactive, other companies seem hesitant, considering postponing their own launches to avoid a head-on collision.
An industry insider shared with The Game Business that the idea of GTA 6 releasing in late October or early November is daunting: “Our strategy is to avoid launching close to such a significant title. If Rockstar plans for late October, it forces us to consider either an earlier release—hence the surge of summer launch dates—or a later one, hoping to ride the wave of Black Friday sales.”
Before Sony’s announcement of Ghost of Yōtei’s release date, the major releases slated for 2025 were Borderlands 4 and Marathon, both set for September 23. It appears Sony views early October as a strategically safe zone.
Accompanying the announcement, Sony unveiled a new story trailer, showcasing plenty of cinematic moments and snippets of gameplay. The narrative follows Atsu, the lead character, in her gripping revenge journey against six individuals responsible for her family’s demise.
Fans can start securing their copies of Ghost of Yōtei on May 2 at 10 a.m. EDT, with options including a Collector’s Edition brimming with replicas of Atsu’s Ghost mask, sash, and the Tsuba from her katana. Although Sony hasn’t revealed the price for this edition, the standard version will sell for $69.99, with a $79.99 digital deluxe edition also available.
