A dataminer working on Helldivers 2 seems to have unintentionally set off a kind of deadly light display by dropping an Illuminate obelisk. Now, they’re stuck trying to figure out how to trigger it again.
You’ve been fighting foes from the Omens of Tyranny update, and it seems like they might have an orbital laser bombardment hidden away for a rainy day. But whether this feature ever appears in the game is still uncertain.
The dataminer, known as Iron_S1ghts, is a seasoned Helldivers 2 leaker who’s previously given us sneak peeks of the game’s Killzone crossover gear before it was officially announced. They describe this new discovery as “not a full leak,” rather something that “relates to the Illuminate Obelisk.”
They shared a clip that shows an elaborate and stunning light show as they move across a planet’s surface. It’s more than just a spectacle for roasting marshmallows mid-mission, according to Iron_S1ghts, who says that the beams deal “1300 damage on hit.”
Now, just a quick note—the music you hear in the clip isn’t part of the show. Iron_S1ghts mentioned in the comments that they accidentally included some tunes from their own playlist. Too bad, I was kind of hoping the Illuminate Aurora had its own epic soundtrack.
“This was completely unintentional,” they explained. “I was testing the Obelisk projectile by dropping it from the sky, and it just happened mid-process. Who knows what this will do once it’s in the game, but it looked amazing. Surprisingly, it didn’t impact performance much.”
You’re probably wondering if they’ll keep digging into this, right? Well, there’s a hitch. The dataminer is having a tough time replicating the conditions that triggered the effect initially. They noted, “I would’ve recorded better footage, but I haven’t been able to recreate this exact effect.”
Right now, neither the dataminer nor anyone else knows for sure what this means. We’ll have to wait and see if more information surfaces. As always, take leaks and datamines with a grain of salt. Arrowhead has mentioned before that not every leak is exciting or indicative of upcoming features in Helldivers 2.
If nothing else, it’s a new topic to chat about if you’re tired of speculating on fantasy casts for the Helldivers movie.
