Intel has finally decided to tackle the performance issues plaguing its Arc GPUs, launching an investigation to resolve these problems when paired with older CPUs.
Intel’s Action on Arc GPU Performance with Older Processors
At launch, the Intel Arc B580 and B570 GPUs held some promise. Despite having more VRAM than their competitors, they failed to dominate the performance charts. A major setback has been their subpar optimizations.
The focus isn’t just on Intel’s GPU drivers. The Arc Battlemage GPUs have consistently lagged behind, particularly when paired with older processors like the Ryzen 2000 series and Intel’s 9th-gen Core CPUs. The team at Hardware Unboxed was among the first to highlight the Arc B580’s underwhelming performance in such configurations.
After what seems like a long silence, Intel has finally acknowledged the issue in their community forums. Here’s the official response from Intel:
"Thank you for your patience. We are aware of reports of performance sensitivity in some games when paired with older generation processors.
We have increased our platform coverage to include more configurations in our validation process, and we are continuing to investigate optimizations."
The statement suggests that while Intel recognized the issue, their optimization efforts lagged. They promise expanded testing and optimizations across more configurations, but they unfortunately haven’t provided a timeline for when these enhancements might be released.
Intel’s hardware already competes well against its rivals in recent titles, as seen in the Arc B580 and B570’s performance with modern Intel and AMD CPUs. The fact that their own older-gen CPUs faced issues is, without a doubt, surprising.
There’s hope that new patches will allow Intel to better compete with AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. However, this alone might not be enough to shift the balance in the GPU market. The limited availability of Intel Arc Battlemage GPUs means they aren’t currently a strong contender in the budget segment.
