Starting out as an ambitious project by Studio Zero, Metaphor: ReFantazio aimed to carve out its own place in the world of JRPGs, joining the ranks of the renowned Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, which the studio is also known for. With the game now released and capturing the hearts of players everywhere, it’s earned its spot as a beloved title and a strong contender for game of the year. However, whether it will see a sequel remains uncertain.
In a candid chat featured in the latest issue of Japan’s Famitsu magazine (#1880), Katsura Hashino, director of Studio Zero, shared his thoughts on the potential for a sequel. The conversation, which was brought to light by ryokutya2089 and reported by Persona Central, dives into Hashino’s vision for what’s next.
Hashino expressed a desire to take the sequel in a fresh direction, suggesting it might explore a historical setting. He even teased the possibility of the Sengoku period of Japan as a backdrop. “If I decide that the best setting for a future title is the Sengoku period, it might turn into a JRPG with a world like the Basara series (laughs),” Hashino remarked.
Despite this enticing vision, there are currently no concrete plans for a sequel to ReFantazio. Nevertheless, both Hashino and his team are hopeful that Metaphor will grow into a series of its own.
Given that Metaphor: ReFantazio has become Atlus’ fastest-selling game, moving over a million copies at launch, the odds of seeing a sequel are quite favorable. This success also marks a notable shift, as the game has achieved significant popularity on PC — an area where the Persona series traditionally struggled.
