If you’re getting the sense that Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming film, Mickey 17, has been in the pipeline forever, you’re not mistaken. The project has seen numerous setbacks for various reasons, but the recent trailer is making it clear that they are committed to a March 7 release date, which seems unlikely to shift again.
Initially, the goal was to turn the adaptation of Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7 into a big player for the 2024 awards season. Eventually, Warner Bros. Pictures opted to debut it early in 2025, squarely aiming for the pre-summer crowd. This might boost its box office sales, yet it might also dilute its standing in the eyes of critics and award voters as the year progresses. Take Dune: Part Two, for example—it was a standout movie in 2024, but its Oscar prospects are dwindling simply because it premiered in March rather than later in the year. Then again, after all it’s been through, Mickey 17 could end up falling flat, but the trailers hint at something quite promising.
Mickey 17 offers a thrilling dive into sci-fi, laced with clever dark humor. Starring Robert Pattinson as the expendable Mickey Barnes, the story follows his risky escapade on the icy planet Niflheim, where he tackles the daunting task of exploration and colonization. The twist? Every time a Mickey meets his demise, a new iteration is created, complete with most of his memories. The satire is bound to be sky-high, yet the film promises plenty of fun. The outstanding cast also features Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, to name a few.

As expected, Pattinson is poised to deliver another stellar performance, leaning into his more playful side this time. It’ll be intriguing to see how the different Mickeys are portrayed, especially when they meet onscreen. Among the supporting cast, Mark Ruffalo’s role as the antagonist gets more airtime in this trailer, and his face-off against a scrappy rebellion promises to be both bloody and comical. Nonetheless, with Bong Joon-ho penning the adapted screenplay, you can bet that the film won’t stray too far from the gripping drama he’s known for, considering his past successes with films like Parasite and Okja.
Mickey 17 is Warner Bros. Pictures’ first auteur-led film release this year. It’s paving the way for Barry Levinson’s mafia film The Alto Knights on March 21 and Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller Sinners following on April 18.
