Back in September, during Meta’s Connect conference, a major announcement was made in partnership with Microsoft. The tech giants revealed they’re working on enabling Windows 11 PCs to seamlessly pair wirelessly with the Quest devices. Excitingly, they’ve now shared that a preview of this feature will be available come December.
This new capability will let both Quest 3 and Quest 3S devices connect to Windows 11, creating a multi-monitor workspace. It’s quite similar to what Apple users have enjoyed with the Vision Pro, which connected to Mac’s Virtual Display from its February 2024 launch.
With aspirations to boost productivity, Microsoft plans to roll out this feature in a public preview during December. They’re keen on attracting users who are looking to enhance their work efficiency with this mixed reality feature.
Melissa Grant, who heads product marketing for Microsoft 365, shared in a blog post: “Windows in mixed reality unlocks all the features of Windows 11 on mixed reality headsets. Starting with Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, users can smoothly link to their Windows PC or Windows 365 Cloud PC using their Quest headset. It takes just a few moments to establish a connection to a private, high-quality, multi-monitor setup.”
When the feature was first introduced at Connect, Meta gave us a sneak peek of its seamless PC connection, which activates just by looking at the keyboard. Users can instantly access their computer and move windows across multiple virtual monitors—quite an improvement over the current Remote Desktop setup seen with Meta’s Air Link.
While Quest has cemented its status as the standout VR game console, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg is optimistic about deeper Windows integration progressing even further. He said, “This is the route towards establishing a general computing platform. It’s much more than gaming, though Quest excels there. You’ll be able to use it for apps, video streaming, and everything you’d typically do on a general-purpose computer. Quest truly offers a complete package.”
As we wait for more specifics, stay tuned for updates, as we’ll provide more information as soon as it’s available.
