At Minecraft Live, we were treated to an exciting preview of Minecraft’s next big step with Vibrant Visuals. Set to launch later this year for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on select platforms, this update promises to give the game a remarkable visual makeover. With enhanced graphics, featuring elements like directional lighting and volumetric fog, players will be able to easily switch between the classic and the refreshed looks via a simple menu toggle.
Mojang’s team nails their intention with Vibrant Visuals succinctly: it’s crafted to reflect how you picture Minecraft in your mind’s eye. Rather than being a total overhaul or a drastic change in style, it’s more of an enrichment of the game’s famous aesthetic.
Art Director Jasper Boerstra led this project with keen insight, taking cues from the community itself. “I got inspired by streamers,” he shares. Observing how players often disable shaders while building to gain clarity sparked an idea in him. “We wanted to engineer graphics that players wouldn’t need to deactivate—those that would be both engaging and practical for construction tasks. Striking that balance was our goal.”
I had the chance to see these vivid visuals firsthand at Mojang Studios in Stockholm. The philosophy behind them becomes clear the moment you step into one of the two specially designed maps showcasing the development work. While screenshots and trailers offer a glimpse, the real impact of Vibrant Visuals hits home when you’re actually playing.
On the first map, I find myself in a cave with waning sunlight pouring through an opening, accentuating the walls and vines with its light. Outside, a desert expanse glows with the afternoon sun casting intricate shadows—a sight vanilla Minecraft has yet to achieve until now.
Jumping into the second map, I’m enveloped in a lush green valley under the midday sun. Light filters through cherry blossoms, with petals creating delicate shadows in their descent. The nearby water is imbued with golden rays, demonstrating how light dynamically interacts with every block, immersing you in the environment.
Boerstra elaborates on Vibrant Visuals, emphasizing it as more than just a graphical upgrade. It integrates modern visual elements while embracing Minecraft’s unique style by retaining its pixelated charm. This blend of the old with new features ensures the game remains immersive and true to its original essence.
A testament to the seamless integration of the new visuals is how quickly they become second nature. They don’t overshadow the experience but mesh organically with what players expect from Minecraft. Using a simple hotkey to switch between old and new visuals reveals the breathtaking changes introduced with the update, highlighting the enhanced landscapes.
Originally, mountains appeared as blocky massifs, whereas the new fog effects render them misty and distant, adding depth and scale. This doesn’t just enhance appearance; it immerses players, offering a sense of grandeur and mystery.
As stated by Executive Producer Ingela Garneij, Vibrant Visuals marks the beginning of Mojang’s journey to visually elevate Minecraft. They aim for updates that are accessible across platforms while preserving what makes Minecraft’s art style so beloved.
This visual enhancement will be available optionally—not just in toggling between the new and traditional looks, but also with plans for its arrival in Minecraft: Java Edition. It doesn’t spell obsolescence for player-made mods or RTX maps; rather, it provides players an easy way to upgrade their experience without extensive changes.
For veterans, it bridges Minecraft with their creative visions. For new players, it brings the game into the modern era without losing its essence. Once available, accessing this vibrant transformation is as simple as downloading the update.
Typically, Minecraft expands through additional content like new blocks or mechanics. However, Vibrant Visuals redefines the game visually, representing a fresh era. Look out for its free release on Minecraft: Bedrock Edition in the near future.
