A South Korean game studio, Pixelity, has exciting news for all fans of the iconic ’90s anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. They’re bringing an extended reality (XR) game to life, derived from this groundbreaking anime that first aired in 1995.
Pixelity has officially partnered with Japan’s Studio Khara, securing the rights to develop this game. It’s set to roll out in three installments, covering the entirety of the anime’s 26 episodes. The project is already underway, with the first part slated for a 2026 release.
If you’re as dedicated to Neon Genesis Evangelion as we are, you’re already in the loop. The anime didn’t just make waves in Japan; it revitalized the whole anime genre worldwide in the ’90s and influenced countless shows that followed.
The original story is set in 2015, which back in 1995 seemed like the distant future. It follows the journey of Shinji Ikari, a selected pilot assigned to control the Evangelion—humanity’s last hope in combating the enigmatic Angels attacking Tokyo-3.
Though Pixelity hasn’t specified which platforms the game will be available on, they promise an XR experience like we’re living through the same plotlines and action sequences as the beloved show. Players will immerse themselves in the world, fulfill missions, and engage in thrilling battles.
Intriguingly, the game will also incorporate collaborative gameplay, allowing interactions with well-known characters from the series. This feature is sure to capture the hearts of longtime fans. Pixelity intends to deliver the kind of high-energy experience that action-adventure gamers crave.
Established in 2017, Pixelity isn’t new to the VR gaming scene. They’ve produced several engaging games like “Puttzzle” (2023), “Crazyworld VR” (2022), and “Rise of the Fallen” (2018). Presently, the team is also developing two other VR titles: “The Patcher” and “Teahouse of Souls.”
While Evangelion has ventured into VR before, this new game marks the first time it will be officially accessible to play at home. Fans might recall Bandai Namco’s “Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls,” a four-person experience that could only be enjoyed at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan back in 2017. This upcoming game is a significant leap forward, giving fans worldwide a chance to step into the Evangelion universe from the comfort of their own space.
