nDreams, the creative force behind the popular free-to-play arena shooter FRENZIES, recently disclosed that the game will be exiting early access later this year. However, contrary to earlier plans, it won’t be making its debut on the PSVR 2.
In a recent announcement, the studio explained that while they won’t be launching FRENZIES on PSVR 2, there are other thrilling updates on the horizon for fans of the platform.
"We’re thrilled to announce that once FRENZIES leaves Early Access later this year, it will remain free-to-play! Since its Early Access launch on Meta Quest, the game has been met with fantastic enthusiasm from players who have embraced its unique take on chaos, and we are committed to enhancing that experience as we move forward," stated the studio. "To ensure we’re delivering the best possible version, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus solely on the Meta Quest release and halt plans for PSVR 2. We understand this may be disappointing for those eagerly awaiting the game on PSVR 2, but rest assured, we have more exciting announcements for that platform coming soon!"
They also hinted at fresh FRENZIES updates over the next few weeks, promising more insights into their Early Access roadmap.
Initially launched for Quest 2 and newer devices in October 2024, FRENZIES has been a hit with its fast-paced arena combat, comprehensive arsenal of weapons, and diverse game modes. All of this is woven into a robust VR-native experience that has captivated players.
Those PSVR 2 enthusiasts who were keen on joining at launch might feel let down, yet this decision seems strategic from the developers’ perspective.
In the last year, Quest has experienced a surge in its popularity among younger users, particularly with the introduction of the affordably priced $300 Quest 3S. This rise has simultaneously increased the demand and viability of free-to-play content on the platform.
Samantha Ryan, Meta’s Vice President of Metaverse Content, noted earlier this year, "We anticipate that the free-to-play model will become a solid strategy for developers, who until now have depended heavily on premium apps. Both F2P and premium models are likely to coexist."
nDreams is also navigating a challenging economic landscape. It appears they are aiming to optimize their returns by focusing on their largest potential audience. This shift comes after the UK-based studio restructured, merging nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio into a new entity, ‘Compass’, following some layoffs.
Despite these changes, nDreams remains one of the most experienced XR game developers. They have a stellar portfolio, including acclaimed VR titles such as Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Synapse, Fracked, Little Cities, and Phantom: Cover Ops.
