Video games making their way into TV shows and films is hardly a novel concept. Scores of these adaptations have made their debuts both on the big screen and through streaming platforms—some have been smash hits, others not so much. And with titles like BioShock, Gears of War, and Mass Effect gearing up for their own adaptations, it’s a trend that’s only growing.
To celebrate this vibrant crossover of media, I’ve delved into the world of video game adaptations and curated a list of my top picks. Now, before you prepare to defend your personal favorites, let me clear the air. Every entry on this list comes wholeheartedly recommended. Gone are the days when merely “decent” castings and subpar plots would suffice. What we have here are the absolute standouts, the top-notch, must-see adaptations. Ready to dive in? Here are the seven best video game adaptations to date.
### 7. Dragon Age: Absolution
Originally planned as a very different game concept centered around heists, Dragon Age: Absolution hit Netflix in 2022, inspired by themes within Dragon Age: The Veilguard. It features a band of characters attempting to steal a formidable Tevinter artifact. The series provides a delightful window into a fresh corner of Thedas with an enchanting team of characters, notably the endearing Qwydion voiced by Ashly Burch. It does have its limitations, largely owing to its contextual placement within the universe, which might make it a tad less accessible for newcomers. Nevertheless, if you find the themes of Templars, Blood Mages, and Demons intriguing, it could very well be worth your while.
### 6. Sonic the Hedgehog
Who could’ve predicted that Sonic’s disastrous first live-action appearance would lead to such a beloved franchise adaptation? Both the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and the Knuckles miniseries have delighted audiences by capturing Sonic’s animated energy seamlessly. A significant upgrade came thanks to a delayed release to refine Sonic’s initial image, thankfully turning it into something cinephiles could appreciate. Jim Carrey deserves a nod too, as his performance as Dr. Robotnik is gleefully entertaining. Fans are eagerly anticipating Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where Keanu Reeves steps in to voice the beloved character Shadow the Hedgehog.
### 5. The Last of Us
The collaboration among PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, and HBO yielded a faithful rendition of the 2013 hit survival game, The Last of Us. The series has Joel and Ellie, played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey respectively, journey through a decimated America. Although it closely follows the game’s narrative, this can lead to frequent comparisons for those familiar with the source material. Yet, where the show truly excels is in moments where it adds to or diverges from the game’s plot, like the eerie opening starring John Hannah as a science insider, or the touching third episode about Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett). Season two, set to drop in 2025, is poised to adapt events from The Last of Us Part 2.
### 4. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a splendid collaboration between Studio Trigger and the Cyberpunk universe, unfolding as a prequel to Cyberpunk 2077. The gripping tale of a gritty young street urchin, his crew, the jobs they undertake, and their fateful entanglement with Arasaka Corporation makes for a riveting watch. The series expertly guides you through highs and gut-wrenching lows, leaving the tragic ending clear almost from the outset.
### 3. Castlevania
Powerhouse Animation and Netflix joined forces to breathe life into Castlevania, taking on the formidable task of adapting this iconic game series into an animated show. With an adult twist, robust storytelling, and a stellar cast—including Dracula (Graham McTavish), Alucard (James Callis), and Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage)—it’s been a resounding success across its four seasons. The sequel, Castlevania: Nocturne, carries this legacy forward during the French Revolution period.
### 2. Fallout
Doubts accompanied the announcement of a Fallout TV adaptation, but with Kilter Films, Amazon MGM Studios, and Bethesda pooling their expertise, those were quickly dispelled. This series captures the quintessential atmosphere of post-apocalyptic America while delivering a wholly original storyline. Centered around Lucy (Ella Purnell), a vault dweller, Maximus (Aaron Moten) of the Brotherhood of Steel, and Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul, it strikes the perfect balance between humor, intensity, and adventure. The success of its initial season has set up substantial anticipation for the upcoming second.
### 1. Arcane
Riot Games and Fortiche Studios finally realized an ambitious journey with Arcane, unfolding a vibrant narrative from the League of Legends universe. The duality of Piltover and Zaun and the complex relationship between sisters Vi and Jinx is beautifully animated, complemented by a powerful soundtrack. Whether you’re a gaming aficionado or a total novice to the League universe, Arcane’s storytelling and artistry are sure to enchant you. As Riot Games explores creating more Runeterra stories, it’s hard to fathom replicating the magic that Arcane has achieved.
