Rec Room has always been a playground filled with a variety of adventures for you and your friends, or even complete strangers, to explore together. The latest addition to this social VR platform is the exciting ‘Run the Block,’ clearly inspired by the nostalgic charm of Dreamcast’s beloved Jet Set Radio from the early 2000s.
The multiplayer mini-game, ‘Run the Block,’ made its grand entrance on December 11th, and it has already captivated the attention of over a million enthusiastic players. Similar to Jet Set Radio, this free-to-play experience challenges you to artfully race against up to nine other players, parkouring through an intricate urban landscape.
Though you won’t be strapping on Aggressive Inline rollerblades like in the original Jet Set Radio, expect plenty of heart-pounding running, nimble hopping, and thrilling grinding along massive rails that snake through the city. True to its roots, the game features a sprawling cityscape filled with graffiti, allowing you to leave your mark with your own tags.
Over the past year, Rec Room hasn’t rolled out many first-party games, focusing instead on quality over quantity. One of the year’s notable releases was ‘My Little Monster,’ a charming pet farming simulation. They’ve also been busy updating the platform with stylish content, including avatar packs inspired by the ‘Monster High’ franchise and elements from Bungie’s popular shooter, Destiny.
This year has also seen Rec Room enhancing its creator suite, empowering users to not only craft intricate worlds but also create and sell assets within the game’s vibrant creator economy. Additionally, the introduction of full-body avatars has opened up even more ways for players to express themselves.
November marked another significant milestone for Rec Room when it finally became available on the Nintendo Switch, adding to its extensive list of supported platforms, which already includes PC VR, all Quest devices, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
With all these expansions and updates, Rec Room continues to offer an inviting and ever-evolving digital universe. What’s particularly exciting is how it seamlessly combines elements of nostalgia with new, interactive experiences, keeping its community of players constantly engaged and coming back for more.
