The word on the street is that Ubisoft, the well-known French publisher, is working on a new battle royale game intended to compete with none other than Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, the new project, which is currently going by the codename “Scout,” draws heavy inspiration from Respawn and EA’s popular game. In fact, some rumors suggest that its artwork closely mirrored that of Apex Legends so much that it was once mistaken for a thumbnail of the game. As development progresses, there have also been whispers about characters that bear a striking resemblance to those in Apex Legends.
The strategy behind this move appears to be Ubisoft’s attempt to capture players who may be drifting away from Apex Legends, as Electronic Arts has recognized a dip in the game’s earnings. “It seems like Ubisoft sees an opportunity here with Apex’s numbers not being what they used to be,” one insider speculates. “They believe there’s room for another hero battle royale to take the stage.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first dance with free-to-play battle royales. Remember Hyperscape? That was their brainchild back in 2020, although it didn’t quite make the lasting impression they hoped for and was shelved after just 18 months. This development also follows closely on the heels of their decision to discontinue the free-to-play shooter XDefiant by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends may be interested to know there’s a fresh 2.0 version coming down the pipeline, expected to drop sometime after April 2026.
