This week marks an exciting time for players on Xbox and PC as they finally get the opportunity to explore S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, now available on the Xbox Series X|S and PC. Despite a laundry list of bugs, GSC Game World’s open-world survival shooter really shines, establishing itself as a fantastic contender for our top Game Pass games. If you’re just stepping into The Zone, here are a few survival tips for Stalker 2 that will help keep you alive.
Tom here, ready to share three ways to make the early hours of your Stalker 2 journey more enjoyable. Let’s dive in!
Stalker 2 is the latest hardcore survival release from Ukrainian developer GSC Game World. Available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and for PC, it’s a tough nut to crack. I highly recommend starting on its normal or hard difficulties, dubbed Stalker or Veteran. After wrapping up the prologue, you’re free to roam The Zone—an unpredictable world eager to claim your life prematurely.
Initially, juggling your inventory between essentials and items you can sell, staying clear of everything hoping to attack you, and surviving those wicked Emissions is tough. But that’s where I come in with some guidance.
Through countless deaths while working on our Stalker 2 review, I’ve gleaned some wisdom that I’m excited to pass on to you. Hopefully, these insights will help you avoid my fate.
Here are my three top Stalker 2 tips for all those Xbox Game Pass adventurers venturing into the irradiated landscape!
Sell to Fellow Stalkers
One of the biggest hurdles in Stalker 2 is managing your inventory. Repairs in The Zone come at a steep price, and since Credits, the in-game currency, can’t be found lying around, selling odds and ends is crucial. While guns and armor are heavy, they fetch a good price at vendors. It’s tough deciding whether to haul them back to camp or travel light to explore just a bit more.
For me, picking up fully repaired weapons and any armor strikes the best balance, favoring exploration over big cash-ins. I recommend grabbing all food, med kits, ammo, drinks, and similar items as you journey. You can stack plenty of these without being bogged down, and it’s no biggie to drop some if something shiny and weighty catches your eye.
Trade with any friendly NPCs you encounter; they’ll eagerly buy your supplies. While groups often have a ‘boss’ you can deal with, any allied trader can offer you 700 Credits. In late games, it’s not much, but early on, it’s a nice financial boost to prolong your adventures.
Turn Off Your Flashlight
Take my advice: turn off that flashlight unless absolutely necessary. I learned this the hard way many hours into my playthrough. While your flashlight is essential for navigating dark areas, it draws unwanted attention. Anything lurking around can spot your light, stripping away your surprise advantage—although it can be quite shocking when you’re caught off-guard in the dark!
Avoid using the flashlight whenever possible, especially outside during nighttime. It acts like a beacon for enemies, highlighting your position. When stealthily maneuvering around groups, the last thing you need is your flashlight waving around like a doomed disco ball. Embrace the RB button to switch it off!
Plan Your Route to Stay Alive
Nothing ends your game faster in Stalker 2 than getting caught in an Emission unprepared. These lethal storms are announced before darkening the skies, granting you a few minutes to find shelter until they pass. Being stranded in unfamiliar territory when the alert sounds is a recipe for disaster.
I suggest navigating from point of interest to point of interest towards your destination, ensuring you’re always within reach of a potential refuge. And remember, don’t let your inventory get so packed that you’re reduced to a crawl—running from an Emission is not something you can waddle away from!
As you find your footing and explore the stunning world GSC has crafted (now officially off the list of upcoming Game Pass games), I’m certain you’ll discover more strategies to evade its threats.
