If you thought Stardew Valley enjoyed its fair share of fame, you might be surprised to learn just how much it has ascended in popularity. This beloved indie game has recently reached a remarkable sales milestone.
Stardew Valley is adored as a farming simulation game, and it’s hard to find someone who hasn’t at least heard about it, even if they haven’t played it themselves. Despite the genre being broadly appealing rather than overwhelmingly so, the success of this game is extraordinary. Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, the creative mind behind the game, updated Stardew Valley’s official website to share some impressive numbers. As of December 2024, the game has surpassed 41 million copies sold across various platforms. On PC alone, it accounted for more than 26 million of those copies, with an additional 7.9 million copies sold on the Nintendo Switch.
To grasp the significance of this sales figure, it places Stardew Valley comfortably in the 15th spot among the best-selling games of all time. This accomplishment leaves it trailing just a little behind Wii Fit and places it ahead of iconic titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Considering its indie origins, this is staggering. To give you a bit more perspective, nearly 11 million copies were sold in less than a year, since Barone revealed back in February last year that the game had reached over 30 million in sales.
In 2024, fans were treated to the latest update, version 1.6, despite the fact that Barone had announced his next project, Haunted Chocolatier, three years earlier. But don’t worry if you’ve been eagerly anticipating this follow-up, because the developer assured us just last month that it’s still very much in the works. Barone mentioned significant progress has been made, and with Stardew Valley’s immense popularity, he certainly has the luxury of taking his time with this one.
