### The Heartbreaking Tale of the Benjy Tree
Decades before the events of “South of Midnight,” two brothers named Rhubarb and Benjy lived together. Benjy was not like other kids; his dreamy nature made him stand out, attracting relentless bullying. In hopes of a fresh start, Rhubarb moved them to a new town. Initially, things improved, but soon, Benjy became a target again. The bullying escalated from verbal jabs to physical violence, culminating in an incident where Benjy was pelted with stones, killing a nearby rabbit.
While creatures like Two-Toed Tom have clear connections to specific folktales, the origins of the Benjy Tree are less direct. Nonetheless, wood spirits are a common theme in various mythologies.
