After a long wait since 2015, Catan has finally received a new update with the release of its sixth edition. This updated version is now available for purchase from various online retailers, including Asmodee, Miniature Market, and the Catan Shop, all priced at $49.99.
The latest edition brings a fresh take with new artwork, slightly larger playing pieces, enhanced packaging, and a more streamlined design. Despite these updates, the core mechanics and gameplay, which fans have loved since the original Settlers of Catan debuted in 1995, remain as immersive as ever. Catan is often hailed as a game that opened the door for the popularity of Euro-games among the American tabletop enthusiasts, thanks to its intriguing mechanics and collaborative nature.
Although this new edition is compatible with expansions from earlier versions like Traders & Barbarians, it also coincides with the release of revamped versions of two major expansions: Seafarers and Cities & Knights. Like the base game, each of these expansions costs $49.99 and requires the base version of Catan 6E for play. Seafarers introduces the exciting option to explore and settle on islands beyond your home territory, while Cities & Knights brings a deeper layer of complexity with the addition of barbarian marauders and new progress cards that allow you to enhance your settlements.
The standard edition of Catan 6E, along with its expansions, supports up to four players. If you’re looking to include up to six players in your game nights, you’ll need to invest in one of Catan’s extensions. These extensions come equipped with all necessary tokens and components to accommodate two extra players. Pricing for the extensions runs at $29.99 for the base game and the Seafarers expansion, while the Cities & Knights extension is slightly pricier at $31.99. Remember, you’ll need the appropriate expansions, alongside the base game and its extension, to enjoy the added content of Seafarers and Cities & Knights with more players.
